I just realized I have been neglectful in my craftylilmomma duties and haven’t posted pictures from my son Owen’s birthday party (bad mommy, slaps self on hand). He requested a “Pirates of the Caribbean / Lego” party and I had a blast putting everything together for him. Now I’m not one of these moms that can spend a months salary on birthday parties but it still turned out awfully cute if I do say so myself.

Most of the accessories I used were purchases from Rhode Island Novelty or from Oriental Trading. I got the banner, plates, and treasure chest from Hobby Lobby.

In the age of emails, text messages, and social networks I have come to the realization that letter writing and penpalling has become a lost artform! When I was in high school…cough…15…cough…years ago I used to write notes to my boyfriend and friends all the time. I also had penpals in several countries and even had a long distance relationship where I wrote at least a little something to my boyfriend everyday and at the end of the week I would send the letter and he did the same. Before emails and where called India was COMPLETELY out of the question it was the only way we could stay in touch with each other and still feel connected!

I hate that people have gotten so far away from writing that many people don’t even send formal invitations to birthday parties anymore…the just create an event on myspace, facebook, or some other network that they and their friends belong to. Am I the only one that misses putting pen to paper and all the beautiful colors & styles of stationery…from simple lined paper to the fancy floral thing that you seal with a kiss?

So this is for you…lets revive this art and have fun doing it! I decided tonight to start making up some notecard sets ready to buy right here on my blog! Please check back as more sets will be added periodically…and also if you would like to request a set please make a comment!

I have never when a fan of The Wizard of Oz. GASP you say! How could I not like such a classic movie!?! Don’t know if it was the fact that it was shoved down my throat every year on TV as THE movie to watch or the fact that Dorothy was annoyingly nice or the fact that it instilled in me a primal fear of tornadoes for a very long time…but No I don’t care for the movie. Years later I figured out why…I was invited to the greatest musical in existence by one of my besties…it is called Wicked and anyone that has seen it will completely understand why I would have the “Wicked” Witch of the West and Glinda the “Good” Witch on the same invitation…they were best friends after all! Those of you that haven’t seen the musical are so confused right now and I apologize…I suggest you go read up on it. And yes I will make a Wizard of Oz one also because I have the graphics for it…but they were bought for Elphaba…not Dorothy.

When my son told me he wanted a cowboy birthday party I must admit I was a bit surprised. He’s not exactly a “cowboy” type kid but he was positive that’s what he wanted (I finally figured out that he just wanted a horse to ride at the party so we arranged for a pony ride). He is a very opinionated child and wanted to help me design the invite…and he did! He told me where to put everything and which graphics and backgrounds to use till it was to his liking. I think it turned out very well myself. What do you think?

Baby it’s been awhile

Wow where to even start!

It’s been so long since I have blogged. So much has gone on and so much has changed! I have been working just here and there…just not as much as normal and I haven’t had time to blog at all. Between moving 10 years of our life, husband switching departments at work, kids switching schools, and computer and internet troubles all summer long…I’m just glad that I survived and things are starting to get back to normal.

My birthday present from hubs was a new laptop so hopefully all my computer troubles are over for awhile and now that a family routine is pretty much set I’m ready to get back in the swing of things :)

Flirty, Dirty, & 30! A rockin 30th birthday bash invite!

I was asked to design an edgy but feminine surprise birthday party invite for a friend of mine. She’s a girl that loves music, tattoos, harley davidsons, & animal print…so she had to have a fun hip edgy invite right!

This invitation with the hot pink zebra and pink/black/white leopard print combined with the “tattoo” 30 in the corner is a cool mix of edgy and retro design that encompasses everything that my friend is…classy, fun, and a bit rough around the edges (but in a good way :) )

I was absolutely honored when my friend Nim from Nim's Invitations came to me with a project she needed help with. Even though we wouldn’t be paid it was well worth the time to me…designing a very special Jamboree patch for her sons boy scout troop! My husband was an eagle scout and I was a girl scout as a child and I understand the importance of those patches and the responsibility and skills that earning them teach. I feel very privileged that I was able to help design something that these young men will have to earn and therefore will appreciate!

Photography business cards with a modern whimsy

I have been approached by a repeat customer to design her some business cards to match a new photography website she is having designed. Here is a screenshot of the site she is having built. She told me she wanted her business cards to have the same flair/feel to them…kinda classy modern with a bit of whimsy with the bubbles. Sophisticated and fun at the same time! As I was designing the cards I tried to ride the fine line…didn’t want them too stuffy yet couldn’t be too childish either…had to get just the right amount of bubbles and in just the right places and colors…lol. It wasn’t as easy as you would think! I actually had a difficult time and redid it several times before I was happy with the balance…but I will let you be the judge. I welcome your comments :)

An amazing woman with a heartbreaking story…

…I’m going to switch gears here for a bit. I normally just post my designs or craft projects that I have been looking at but within the past couple of weeks I learned of a story that I can’t keep my mind off of. The story of a woman who had a very hard choice to make and thought she had made the right one for her, her child, and her family…but thanks to calculated lies and betrayal she is now fighting a battle to be able to be in her daughters life.

I wont rewrite the entire story here because quite frankly it will make me hot to do so. But I want to introduce you to this story and this strong woman that is going through this hell. She has recently been featured on Dr Phil and in People magazine telling her story. Her name is Carla Moquin and she has 3 beautiful daughters, Alpha, Echo, and Peri. Peri was given up for an open adoption when she was born…an open adoption that the adoptive parents have illegally closed using calculated lies and fraud.

A Star Is Born

My dear friend Kim (owner of Little Ladybug Designs) was asked by a client to create a movie poster birth announcement. We have both seen them but had never attempted to do one ourselves so she asked me to brainstorm with her. She completed her design which turned out great and I told her I would love to make up a sample one because I had so much fun talking about her project. She told me she had the PERFECT picture to use and sent me an amazing pic of when her daughter was a baby! This is the original pic before the editing.

I did my magic and I really like how it turned out! Hope you like it…I sure enjoyed designing it :)

She asked if I would be willing to work on some invitations for them and of course I jumped at the chance! I came up with a design for her and also put together a storyboard to show her how the invitations can tie everything they like together…and a few little things to add to it ;) Here is the storyboard I presented to her…enjoy!

Ok...so I was told by a very imformed person (my best friend, mother of 6 including 2 pre-teen girls) that if I had a Hannah Montana -ish invitation then I needed to have a Miley Cyrus -ish invitation also...because she is as popular if not more so t...han her character...and her style is a bit different...so here is my Miley invitation...

I had a client contact me saying she loved the pirate/mermaid invite I had done and would like something similar for her twins birthday. The party they were having was a pool party so she wanted it more of an “under the sea” party with the pirates and mermaids included. So I took my theme and modified it to include all the cute creatures of the deep…enjoy!
